Mount Rogers National Recreation Area is one of the jewels of the Appalachian Mountains. The highlands offer numerous activities in horseback riding, hiking, fishing, swimming and biking. The Virginia Highlands Horse Trail extends for almost 80 miles, from Elk Garden to the New River, crossing Mount Rogers. This is the highest point in Virginia at over 5700 feet.
High Country Horse Camp is strategically located adjacent to the Virginia Horse Trail and offers abundant opportunities for horseback riding. Cool summer weather and vast mountain panoramas overwhelm first-time visitors. The Mount Rogers high country offers the most scenic riding on the East Coast. The trails meander atop grassy balds where wild ponies roam and crosses federally designated wilderness areas-Lewis Fork, Little Wilson Creek and Little Dry Run.
The Wilderness Act of 1964 defined the wilderness as an area "untrammeled by man, where man is a visitor who does not remain, and has outstanding opportunities for primitive recreation".
In cooperation with the Forest Service, High Country Horse Camp follows the principles of "Leave No Trace" to preserve the wilderness and the Mount Rogers Recreation Area. Group sizes are limited to avoid impact and damage to the character of the wilderness. This land management preserves the wilderness and provides positive riding experiences for all.
